Who may join the MIoD?
Anyone who has an employment record of being a director or senior manager of an enterprise for a minimum period of three years either in the public or private sector and is not disqualified from being a director in terms of the Companies Act.

Who is legally barred from becoming a director?
Persons over 18 years of age who are of sound mind and are not undischarged bankrupts may become directors. However, in public companies the maximum age of a director is 70 years. The Companies Act also blocks certain persons involved in the promotion or management of companies, under specified circumstances, from being appointed directors of companies in Mauritius.

What are the objects of the MIoD?
The MIoD’s primary objective is to promote Corporate Governance in Mauritius, in all enterprises in both the public and private sectors, in order to achieve an ethical climate of fairness, responsibility, accountability and transparency towards all stakeholders of the enterprise  

Who or what are ‘stakeholders’?
In previous times many corporate bodies focused their responsibility and reporting on their shareholders. It has been acknowledged that enterprises have responsibilities towards other groups such as the employees, lenders, creditors, customers, communities, labour unions, local authorities as well as the State. All of these, including the shareholders,  are collectively referred to as the stakeholders.   

What is Corporate Governance all about?
Following a number of high profile corporate scandals that caused losses to investors via fraudulent reporting or bad management of capital, as well as to other stakeholders, many of whom lost their life savings, several initiatives were commenced to put forward a code of recommended best practices that would bring about responsible corporate behavior. The Code of Corporate Governance in Mauritius became effective in 2005

Are there any examinations that I need to pass to become a director?
No, there are not at this stage any examinations that are required to become a director. Admission as a member is based on your employment track record, particularly your relevant experience as a director or senior manager of an enterprise of substance

Is my membership of the MIoD international?
Your membership of the MIoD is limited to Mauritius and is not transferable to another country. There are Institutes of Directors in many other countries and should your circumstances change and you relocate, you would be able to apply for membership elsewhere

Are there benefits for members of the MIoD?
Yes, very much so. You are recognized by your status as a leader and are entitled to add designatory letters after your name. The MIoD has a comprehensive education programme that will keep members continuously up to date with developments and attendance at such courses will be available to members of the MIoD at substantial discounts

Will I be able to use designatory letters after my name?
Members of the MIoD who are in good standing are entitled are entitled to use the appropriate post nominals to their grade of membership. Associates can describe themselves as ‘A.MIoD’ , Members may use ‘M.MIoD’ and Fellows may use ‘F.MIoD’

Is it expensive to become a member of the MIoD?
An non-refundable application for membership will cost Rs500 and once you have been accepted as a member there is an annual subscription payable each January. Currently these amounts are Rs1000 for Associates, Rs2000 for Members and Rs3000 for Fellows of the Institute

Will becoming a member of the MIoD be recognized?
Your membership of the MIoD will be seen as a prestige acknowledgement that you are a business leader and gives you the status of belonging to a senior profession

Do I have to do a minimum number of courses each year to retain my membership?
At this stage there is no requirement in the MIoD for you to do a certain number of hours of courses each year to retain your membership. This may change in the future. The MIoD recognizes that, as a professional, you will be prudent to ensure that you keep yourself continuously up to date with the changing environment.

Are there many members in the MIoD?
We currenly have over 250 members and new applications are being received regularly as the MIoD becomes better known

Do companies support the MIoD?
Many companies have entered into long term commitments to support the MIoD with generous financial contributions. These companies are referred to as our Founders and Corporate Patrons and are listed in detail elsewhere on this website.
